Stonemason at work . . .

A tall hoarding has gone up around the Hogarth statue in Chiswick High Road – but there are glimpses to be had of the specialist work going on behind it. The stone plinth of the statue has weathered badly, and may possibly have suffered surface damage during cleaning a few years ago. Now Hounslow Council has arranged for the refacing of the lettered surfaces – and the stone mason is on site, completing this work.

. . . and in early June the hoarding came down. The plinth has been refaced on both sides with beautifully cut inscriptions.

A handsome information panel was unveiled shortly before Easter near Hogarth’s tomb-monument at Chiswick.

It was sponsored by the Friends of St Nicholas Church and designed by Toni Marshall to match the panel at the Hogarth statue.

The panel is intended to help visitors read the now-worn inscriptions on the tomb which was restored in 2010. These include the epitaph to Hogarth composed by his friend, the actor David Garrick.
