Hearth and Home . . .

A danaged hearth

Looking down on a hearth slab – the spiky wood (red) runs across the fireplace opening!

The fire at Hogarth’s House in August resulted in some areas of carpet being charred as well as water damage when the fire was being put out. Taking up the carpet revealed that the stone slabs had been damaged with adhesive and spiky gripper-rods when the carpet was laid in 1997.

The slabs need to be restored or replaced but unfortunately, the cost of this work cannot be met under the insurance for the House. The Trust approached the Old Chiswick Protection Society to see if they could assist. We are absolutely delighted to report that they have provided a grant to cover the whole of the cost of this work.
