Set out from Hogarth’s House to walk gently into the 18th century! Local historian Val Bott will lead the walk, taking in Church Street, once the main street of Chiswick Town, St Nicholas’ Church where the Hogarth family were buried, the causeway where the Chiswick ferry and London wherries beached, the big houses of Chiswick Mall, the brewery quarter and returning along Burlington Lane to Chiswick House. The group will be there in time for participants to stay for Simon Thurley’s lecture, which launches the Chiswick Book Festival.
The price is £5 per head, payable on the day, all proceeds to support Hogarth’s House.
As part of our commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Hogarth’s death, the Trust has invited Dr Steven Parissien once again to present his famous Lecture on The History of Gin with a tasting of different samples.
This event took place at 7pm on 31 July 2014 at The George & Devonshire on Hogarth Roundabout, London W4, a pub which existed when Hogarth lived in Chiswick. We are grateful to Steven Parissien provided a lively account of gin drinking and a tasting which encouraged the audience to identify the “botanicals” which flavour the gin and choose their favourite gins. And thanks must go to the George & Devonshire staff who cheerfully coped with this odd event and provided a tasty beef supper for a large crowd after the talk.
